Sydney Theatre utilises the latest in theatre and design technology to ensure optimal audience conditions with excellent sight lines and acoustic environment. The auditorium, foyers and fly tower occupy the space created by the demolition of a 1950s warehouse. Back-of-house and support facilities are located within adjacent heritage buildings. The theatre has full disabled access to public areas and to a range of seats in the auditorium. It is compatible with other major venues around Australia in terms of its key stage dimensions, service access and general standard of facilities.
The stage performance area is 12 metres by 9 metres. The stage can be augmented through the use of the three-part forestage lift. A curbed thrust of 3m from the centre, 2m at each side, can ber added for the loss of 47 seats. The lift can also be lowered to create an orchestra pit for 30 musicians. Each of the forestage portions can be operated independently to suit performance requirements. The stage has 54 winched scenery bars with a further 6 over the forestage area.
The proscenium is operable and can be adjusted via a series of diaphragms to heights between five-and-a-half metres and seven metres and widths between 10 metres and 14 metres. In addition a solid three-dimensional proscenium can be placed downstage of the operable proscenium.
The auditorium has a series of lighting positions in a range of locations: balcony fronts, vertical box booms, and two main bridges. Various temporary and demountable technical positions are located throughout the stalls and are linked sub-floor cable paths.
